First stand-ups in Canggu whitewater with Young Surf Canggu

A beginner morning with a coach beside you — and when a board hire on the sand is enough.

Young Surf Canggu · Canggu, Bali

Most people who write to us have never stood on a board in Canggu. They have seen the peaks at Berawa or Echo Beach from a café, or they have watched a lineup at Batu Bolong and wondered how anyone gets out there. First stand-ups in Canggu whitewater are how we start. The work happens in the foam, close to the sand, with a coach in the water — not out on a crowded peak.

This note is what that morning actually looks like. It is not a sales page. If you already know you want a session, go to packages or write to us with the day. If you are still deciding whether whitewater is the right place to begin, keep reading.

Why the first session stays in the foam

Whitewater is the broken wave after it has already crashed. It is slower, closer, and easier to read than the unbroken face further out. For a first stand-up, that is the point. You can still feel the push of the ocean, still time a pop-up, still fall and get back on the board — without fighting a crowd or paddling through a set that is not yours yet.

We match the morning to the swell and your level. Some days the foam is gentle and wide. Some days it is punchier. Nearby lineups include Berawa, Echo Beach, and Batu Bolong. The coach decides where the whitewater is usable that morning. You do not need to pick a peak from a map.

What happens on the sand first

You meet on the beach. If you arrive without gear, you hire a board on Canggu sand and we set the board for that swell — volume, length, and leash — before anyone walks into the water. Then a short land check: where your hands go, when to push up, how to fall so you do not land on the board.

None of this is a long classroom. It is enough so the first wave is not a surprise. Then you walk in together.

A coach stays in the water with you, not calling from the beach.

A coach beside you, not shouting from the beach

Young Surf Canggu runs time in Canggu whitewater with a coach in the water. That is the difference you feel on a first morning. Someone can turn the board, call the wave, and be next to you when you stand — or when you do not.

Private surf is one coach at your pace. Semiprivate is a smaller shared session. Both can be a first stand-up. Write with the day you want in the water and which format you prefer. We reply from Canggu and confirm.

Private or semiprivate for a first morning

If you want the coach’s full attention — nerves, timing, one board, your own rhythm — private surf is the cleaner fit. If you are coming with a friend and you are both starting, semiprivate surf keeps the group small without splitting the morning into two bookings. Prices are on the packages page: private IDR 500k, semiprivate IDR 400k.

When board hire on the sand is enough

You do not need to buy a board for a first session. Hire on the sand if you arrive without gear. We set it for that swell so you are not fighting a short board in whitewater, or a log that will not turn. If you already travel with a board, say so when you write — we will still match the plan to the morning.

After the foam

When you are ready, the same school runs a guided lineup beyond the foam. Until then, whitewater is the session. There is no prize for paddling out early. First stand-ups in Canggu whitewater are enough of a morning: a few real rides, a few falls, and a clearer sense of whether you want another day.

If that sounds like the morning you want, tell us the day. We will take it from the sand.
